Verizon’s Internal Audit Team Joins Forces with “Stop Hunger Now” to Package 36,000 Meals
Making A Difference for Underserved Communities in Zambia
Internal Audit employees conducted a team-building activity during their Annual Internal Audit Training on June 24 in Morristown, N.J., that resulted in 36,000 meals being assembled for underserved communities in Zambia.
The Verizon Foundation organized the activity in partnership with Stop Hunger Now, an international hunger-relief agency that has committed itself to end hunger for more than 15 years. Some 140 employees from around the country participated in the fun, hands-on mission project.
“I was happy to partner with the Verizon Foundation and Stop Hunger Now on this dynamic opportunity to create a teambuilding event that would empower employees to make a social impact and at the same time connect fellow colleagues who would normally never meet on a daily basis”, said Shane Sanders, senior vice president-Internal Audit.
The assembly process combined rice, soy, dehydrated vegetables and a flavoring mix including 21 essential vitamins and minerals into small meal packages. These meal packages will be shipped to Zambia, located in southern Africa, to support school feeding programs and crisis relief. The food stores easily, transports quickly and has a shelf life of two years.
“Packaging meals was an exciting team event,” said Matt Lanahan, a consultant with Internal Audit and part of the planning committee. “We specifically implemented a four team competition to help motivate the teams and keep things fun. Stop Hunger now is extremely organized. Overall it was an enjoyable time for all involved.”
“This was an amazing experience as we got to see firsthand how our speed and accuracy had a direct effect on the results of the team and that working together as a team was fun”, added Niloufer Tamboly, consultant- Internal Audit.
Jarod Ring, assistant program manager of Stop Hunger Now, said “The speed and efficiency at which Team Verizon packaged the meals was unlike anything I've ever seen. The team created an extremely fun atmosphere of excitement as they joined together to accomplish a great work of service that will benefit thousands.”
