Thousands of parents, teachers, students and community leaders gathered in Fort Lauderdale, FL June 26 - June 29 for the 113th Annual PTA National Convention and Exhibition held at the Broward County Convention Center.

Jan Harp Domene, National PTA President and Patrick Gaston, President of the Verizon Foundation, had the distinct honor to make a big splash and present Dara Torres, mother and Olympic gold medalist, with a PTA Life Achievement Award. As a PTA Ambassador, Torres joins millions of parents and educators who work toward improving the lives of children, as well as urging parents and other family members and caregivers to be more involved.

In his remarks, Gaston thanked the PTA for being a great American institution responsible for giving all children the opportunity to achieve and succeed. "The Verizon Foundation is very proud to partner with the PTA. We share a vision for all children. We share a commitment to leveraging parental involvement, advocacy for children and technology in order to make that vision a reality. And we share a strong sense of responsibility and accountability for giving every child the opportunity to succeed." Gaston reiterated that there are too many students who are not prepared for college or the demands of the workplace and that the Verizon Foundation and the PTA are committed to changing this trend. "There are no simple solutions to these issues. But there are answers and that's why the Verizon Foundation supports early childhood and K-12 programs, particularly for students in underserved communities, to advance their opportunities for success in school."

The PTA comprises millions of families, students, teachers, administrators, and business and community leaders devoted to the educational success of children and the promotion of parent involvement in schools. PTA prides itself on being a powerful voice for all children, a relevant resource for families and communities, and a strong advocate for public education. Membership in PTA is open to anyone who wants to be involved and make a difference for the education health, and welfare of children and youth.
