Verizon Leadership Development Program Volunteers assist in recovery efforts in a Queens, NY community severely impacted by Hurricane Sandy
A team of Verizon Leadership Development Program (VLDP) volunteers from the tri-state area visited the brave men and women of the Breezy Point Fire Department to assist in clean-up efforts, helping in any way that was needed.
The Verizon team helped to clean the fire department clubhouse, where many members of the town's Fire Department are still living. Their efforts included collecting and removing garbage, as well as sweeping and mopping floors in preparation for their annual holiday party. Almost two months after the horrific storm ripped through the area, the firehouse is still trying to recover.
Michael Colletti, VLDP-Engineering, said, "It was a very chilling and moving experience to see the neighborhood that was flooded by the hurricane and then leveled by subsequent fires. In between cleaning up the Fire Department's clubhouse and doing what little we could to help, we were given a tour of the devastation. Seeing the damage with my own eyes, I realize how much I have to be thankful for this holiday season, and see how much work still has yet to be done."
After the storm, the firehouse was the focal point for the community, serving as a shelter for many who lost their homes. Currently, all of the buildings in the area are being inspected and the firehouse is at risk of being torn down.
Says John Stillman, VLDP-Engineering, "To put things in perspective, when I got there, I found all the firemen had been living in the firehouse - most of their homes had been destroyed. Almost immediately, another house fire was reported. They do not have running septic systems, question their water supply and expressed frustration dealing with insurance companies. They are truly in dire need of support. Please make sure to include those who do not have a home this holiday season in your thoughts and prayers."
