Verizon Employee Alvin Ilano Mentors High School Students

“When I first started mentoring, I wasn’t sure what effect I could possibly have on the students. Now, I know I am making an impact.”

Alvin Ilano has spent the last year actively mentoring high school students interested in pursuing science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) careers as part of Verizon’s collaboration with the National Academy Foundation.  Initially drawn to the program as a way to network and strengthen his professional skill set, what Alvin also discovered was students who were eager to engage with him and learn as much as they could about the engineering career path and opportunities available to them.

“When I initially decided to participate in the program, I thought I would speak with the students on a limited basis or that there was only so much I could offer them.  I enjoyed my first experience so much that I participated in more student mentoring events, and what I realized from the student and teacher feedback was that not only were they actively listening but they were absorbing what I had to say.”  The mentoring opportunity has also given Alvin an outlet to strengthen his professional development through outside leadership and work with students who may not otherwise have the opportunity to connect with someone in the STEM field.
