Middle School Students and Mobile Technology

The Verizon Foundation gains additional insight into middle school students and their use of mobile technology with a recently released study.

The Verizon Foundation released the results of a new study today, providing additional insight to the connection between middle school students and their use of technology, both in and out of the classroom. The Verizon Foundation Survey on Middle School Students' Use of Mobile Technology offers new findings to add to the growing body of information on this important topic.

Key findings of this survey, which was conducted by Teenage Research Unlimited (TRU) and commissioned by the Foundation:

  • More than 1 in 3 middle school students use mobile devices to complete their homework, though very few use these devices in the classroom.
  • Those students who do use mobile devices in the classroom express a stronger interest in learning subjects like math and science.
  • Two out of three students who use laptops in the classroom, and over half of all students who use tablets in the classroom say mobile devices helped them learn math and science better.

“Our research supports the fact that mobile technology can inspire and engage students today,” said Rose Stuckey Kirk, President of the Verizon Foundation. “We need to meet children where they are and leverage their use of mobile devices to increase their interest in STEM, especially since STEM jobs are increasing at three times the rate of jobs in other fields, and the number of graduates in the US earning degrees in STEM is decreasing.”
