Chris Jentile and Rob Burden Lead the Race Against Heart Disease
Chris Jentile and Rob Burden Know Numbers
As directors in our Tax Department, it’s their job. But there are other numbers they know and, frankly, they wish they didn’t. Both have family members who have been affected by heart disease – the No. 1 cause of death in the United States.
From the time you arrived at work today until you leave, more than 500 people will have died of heart disease in the United States. That translates to 60 people every hour … one a minute.
It’s those type of numbers that prompted Chris and Rob to get involved with the American Heart Association’s Annual Wall Street Run and Heart Walk.
Since 2008, they have helped to raise more than $100,000 for the American Heart Association by leading the Verizon Team in the annual event.
“I had two cousins who suffered heart attacks before the age of 50 and my grandmother also passed away from heart disease,” said Jentile. “So I have a vested interest in this fight.”
Jentile added that his father lost three brothers to heart disease before age 50 and survived quadruple by-pass surgery. “He just celebrated his 80th birthday and goes to the gym every day and is fitter than me now”, he said.
Burden’s father was a candidate for a heart transplant at age 59 and suffered a life ending heart attack at age 72. “As a result of the AHA Wall Street Run and Heart Walk, I ran the New York City Marathon in 2010 and 2011 with Chris,” Burden said. Running these two marathons helped Chris and Rob raise over $6,000 each for the American Heart Association.”
Burden added that he’s proud of Verizon for its support of volunteerism with the Team Incentive Matching Gifts Program through the Foundation which he and Chris take advantage of to receive up to $10,000 for their fundraising efforts. This event has been turbo charged with the partnering and collaboration of the Verizon fitness and wellness center as last year 112 Verizon runners and walkers participated in the event. Rob and Chris have set a goal of 200 Verizon participants this year.
