Rene Herrera, Verizon Corporate Finance, Awarded HISPA Role Model of the Year

Hispanic's Inspiring Student's Performance and Achievement (HISPA) Role Model of the Year

“The best thing about dreaming is it’s free!”  That’s what Rene Herrera in Verizon’s Corporate Finance Department always tells students when he volunteers as a role model and mentor in the Hispanic community.  Rene has been an active member of HISPA (Hispanic's Inspiring Students’ Performance and Achievement) for the past five years whose mission is to mobilize Latino professionals to serve as active role models in educational programs within their communities and was recently awarded the 2013 HISPA Role Model of the Year.

Commitment to family and community has always been important to Rene.  Coming from a low-income family and raised by a single mother and his grandmother, he always felt he was blessed when he saw the other children living on the streets and wanted to give back to others who were less fortunate.  Those memories were etched into his soul and inspired him to become a volunteer and give back to the community.

Rene came to the United States in 1997 through a Scholarship that he received from the World Bank.  He was the second to go to college in his family of 23 cousins following in the footsteps of his cousin and role model Jorge who had a Computer Engineering degree. While pursuing an MBA at Case Western Reserve University, Rene interned with Verizon in 1998 and was offered a job with Verizon when he graduated.

Rene was also awarded the ASPIRA Hispanic Circle of Achievers in 2012 and has volunteered at the Caracas Children Museum and the Chacao Homeless Children Foundation in Caracas Venezuela, with NY Junior Achievement, and HISPA.  Currently he is the president of the Verizon Hispanic Support Organization (HSO) Mid-Atlantic Chapter.  Under his leadership, the HSO Chapter has implemented many initiatives to promote professional development and community outreach, including the first HSO Career Day in 2012 to inform students about technology careers.
