Lisa Harrison: Transforming Families and Neighborhoods
Transforming Families and Revitalizing Communities One Neighborhood At a Time
When Lisa Harrison volunteered with nonprofit Springfield Neighborhood Housing Services, Inc. (SpringfieldNHS) six years ago she had no idea she would be invited to sit on its board of directors and simultaneously be elected as president two years later.
The Springfield nonprofit transforms families and revitalizes communities through homeownership development, recycling of blighted properties and resident empowerment. This is done through credit counseling and home-ownership education for potential buyers; technical assistance to borrowers from loan intake to closing; flexible financing products that include property rehabilitation; technical assistance with property inspections and rehabilitation services; and post-purchase services that include foreclosure intervention.
“The path to revitalizing communities and neighborhoods is sustainable home ownership.” Harrison said. “I wouldn’t develop any houses that I wouldn’t live in myself.” From training and education for new homeowners to financial fitness, Lisa has been able to think “outside the box” by lending her expertise in marketing to create a new logo and website for the organization, as well as launching a new color scheme and brand identity that coincided with the organization’s 30th anniversary.
She can now ride around the neighborhood and “see and touch” the families that benefit from the success of the organization. She is proud that Verizon supports her volunteer work and participates in the Volunteer Matching gifts program.
