Verizon IT Professionals mentor three teams in the annual First LEGO League regional Robotics Competition
IT volunteers mentored three teams from the Boys & Girls Clubs of Collin County, Texas in the annual FIRST LEGO League (FLL) regional robotics competition in Dallas, Texas on Saturday, December 8th after the culmination of several weeks of preparation. The teams consisted of 20 boys and girls between the ages of 9 and 14 from the McKinney, Frisco, and Plano, Texas branches of the club.
The competition involved designing and programming a Mindstorm robot with various sensors and tool attachments to complete as many missions as possible in a timed competition. This year’s challenge theme was “Senior Solutions” and the teams also had to interview seniors and deliver a presentation on how robotics can help seniors lead a better life.
The IT volunteers for the overall fall program included: Senthil Baalan, Patti Brown (logistics), Don Burgio (program coordinator), Nikhil Dhoble, Lori Ousley (logistics), Nitin (Manohar) Punnakkathara, Prasana Nivas, Aslam Sherule, Chris White (lead robotics instructor & head coach), & Chuck Woolley.
This is the 14th technology class, 8th robotics class, and 3rd competition run by Verizon IT volunteers for this organization since 2007. Overall, IT volunteers have donated over 2,000 hours of their personal time towards these classes which have reached over 180 participants.
Employees in the Dallas area wishing to volunteer in the future should contact Don Burgio for robotics or Henrietta Roby for web design. For information on IT volunteer opportunities in other locations, contact Arnold Coleman.
