Spotlight: Rita Taylor - Seneca Valley High School

Anyone who's ever had teenage children has probably worried about their safety. Rita Taylor, a parent of teenagers and Verizon telecom special clerk, took steps to ensure the safety of 600 high school kids each year and make sure that the biggest night of their young lives has a safe and happy ending.

Five years ago, Taylor took charge of the "after prom" activities for Seneca Valley High School in Maryland. She works closely with local police, parents and teachers to offer the high school's students a safe alternative to unsupervised after-prom parties.

"I organize fundraising, train the parents, work with the county's Project Prom and plan an event that has door prizes, food and entertainment to attract student participation," said Taylor. She also spends many hours as editor of the school's newsletter.

The Verizon Incentive Plan recognized Taylor's many volunteer hours with a $750 donation toward the After Prom party. "It takes $15,000 to put the After Prom event together, so Verizon's gift was extremely helpful," Taylor said.
